21 Jump Street (2012
A pair of underachieving cops are sent back to a local high school to blend in and bring down a synthetic drug ring.
What I appreciated most about it is its unending commitment to genre and a charming self-awareness. Obviously made by and for cop movie fans, blended with a modern sensibility to the high school genre, and never not cognizant of the fact that this is a remake of that Johnny Depp show. On top of that: a lovely turn about adult life and friendships defining one’s self more than the formative educational years.
Of course, it doesn’t hurt that I’m a complete Lord/Miller fan and I’m a sucker for John Woo doves. And limo chases. Best night of our lives? Best night of our lives.
